Most “shelf surfaces” look different in a store aisle, but they all fail the same test: real load + real life. Wood is getting expensive and time-heavy to create finished looking results (cutting, sanding, staining, sealing). Wood doesn't love water, laminates and particle board hate water and that can just mean high humidity! If that sounds saggy, that's because it is! Then there's the rust factor, which getting stainless is costly, and impractical. Wire shelving is… wire shelving.

We built the Toden Surface because the market forces people who just want to get things done constant tradeoffs. You either get a shelf that’s affordable but weak, or strong but takes up precious floor space, or heavy and permanent (like marble and granite). Not to mention most of the options are one-dimensional in use and nature.

The Toden Surface Kit gives you a warm, wood-like feel, a nonporous, abrasion-tolerant skin, and a clean 1" thick profile—while delivering real-world strength. It’s engineered with a rigid and functional hollow-core profile so it can do more than “just hold stuff.” This is a surface that becomes whatever you need next: workbench, desk, entryway bench, entertainment console, laundry room storage, or closet shelf—our goal was to create the most versatile building product on the market.

And unlike typical 6-foot setups that demand brackets every 16" (and a pile of fasteners), Toden gets you there with a simpler, cleaner installation. We removed 70% of the work from the process which speeds up your results and let's you focus more on what's important in life. Then we added the features you wish every modular all in one product should have: integrated LED groove, wire routing, and under-surface channels for modular movement and accessory compatibility which doesn't rely on fasterners.

How it works

1. Mount the brackets to wall studs (two brackets per kit, up to 48" apart).
2. Set the surface onto the brackets using the under-surface channel geometry.
3. Lock it in with the included twist pins
4. Finish the ends with the included end caps for the polished look

Is this just a shelf?
No. It installs like a shelf, but it’s an all in on modular product—so it works as a workstation, desk, bench, TV console, or shelf depending on where you choose to mount it.

Can I run cords for a TV or computer setup?
Yes. The surface includes a dedicated wire routing area to keep cords cleaner and more intentional. You can also drill a hole into it easily with conventional drill bits if you want.

Does it support LED lighting?
Yes. There’s an integrated LED groove designed to accommodate LED strip lighting. You can easily to that later down the road by unlocking the twist pins. No need to stress because we did all the thinking for you and even have recommended products in this article.

How is this different from a wood shelf?
Wood gets expensive, requires a ton of tools, and messy (finishing bottlenecks), and it still won’t give you the integrated features (LED groove, wire routing, under-surface channel functionality) or this load class with a clean bracket system. Not to mention Toden surfaces are designed for extreme environments from bitter cold, to high heat, and relentless humidity.

How hard is installation?
It’s designed to be straightforward: mount brackets to studs, set the surface, lock with twist pins, cap the ends. What makes it “real-world” strong?
The rigidity comes from the engineered internal structure (not just thickness), paired with load-rated brackets and a locking connection. We started on this path because we couldn't find real world strong - so we invented one and took that process extremely seriously.
